Apart from laboratory research RESTAURO will execute tests and examination on a fragment of ST. JOHNS' Cathedral's elevation. The selected fragment consists of the lower part of the southern projection of the western elevation of the cathedral's tower. This chosen piece is constructed from many different materials: burnt bricks laid on lime mortar, sandstone, Gothland limestone. Plasters are also found there.
Church of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, since 1935 Minor Basilica, since 1992 Cathedral of Toruñ Diocese, former main parish church of Old Town of Toruñ. One of three gothic churches of the town, built from brick, aisled hall with monumental west tower. First church from half of 13th century was small, hall without aisles and with polygonal presbytery. This was replaced by aisled hall church in first half of 14th century, which was many times rebuilt and extended until it reached its present form at the end of 15th century. At the tower hangs Tuba Dei the 3rd largest bell in Poland, cast in 1500. |
