Restoration and Conservation of Wall Painting and Sgrafitto
Due to the substantially different technology and methodology needed for the conservation and restoration of wall paintings, the specialization focuses on the specific procedures used during the conservation and restoration of wall paintings based on multi-disciplinary knowledge.
The curriculum begins with the history of traditional building materials, techniques and crafts and continues with techniques of restoration and conservation of wall painting and sgraffito. Students learn basic artistic techniques -drawing, drawing of a figure, basic techniques of painting and basic historical artistic methods - egg tempera, fresco, secco and sgraffito.
Students are taught the proper methodology for conducting research and documentation, the selection of conservation methods, and the actual execution of the restoration of murals as part of the historical architecture. Students also learn the knowledge and skills required for sgraffito restoration and conservation, which represents an important part of the Czech Republic preservation fund. The field of sgraffito restoration is taught within the context of wall painting in general, as from a technological point of view, the restoration and conservation of plaster layer sequences also involves pigmentation and finishing. Appropriate attention is also given to the restoration and conservation of historical plaster layers without a paint-like surface. |
| |
Students are trained in the following fields:
artistic aspects of wall painting,
conservation methods,
materials used in artistic work (aiming at materials used in a certain field) - its properties, resources, application,
natural sciences - with a stress on understanding of causes of degradation of materials used for creation of a work of art and its following prevention against harmful influence of the environment,
training in the basic artistic, arts-and-craft techniques,
history of art and auxiliary historical sciences. |

Restoration and Conservation of Stone and Related Materials
The work of conservators of stone, ceramics, stucco, artificial stone and plaster is understood as an interdisciplinary practice. The training in chemistry, petrography, history of art, building material technology, ethics and restoration aesthetics is essential. The curriculum begins with the history of traditional building materials, techniques and crafts and continues with techniques of restoration and conservation of stone and related materials. Students learn basic artistic techniques - modeling, application of basic historical craftsmanship methods and methods of modelled, cut and formed copy. Concurrently, the theoretical knowledge in the fields of chemistry, technology and art history is developed. During the second year of study the students are able to use gained knowledge for the restoration of basic artistic craftsmanship works such as architectonic elements. The artistic craftsmanship preparation during the second year of the studies increases the demand put on students when completing reconstructions, requiring, for example, the use of preserved photos and historic analogies. Special attention is devoted to issues of polychromy.
During the third year of study students are capable of figural reconstruction. Students execute their work with expert guidance, establish restoration objectives, write restoration reports and complete photographic documentation. In this way they gain experience in all aspects of restoration and conservation work. In the fourth semester the students have a chance to individually restore assigned objects under expert supervision.
The graduates of this specialization may work as an independent art and artistic craft restorer of works of stone, ceramics, stucco and plaster. They are variously able to find employment in restoration studios, in construction companies specializing in historical restoration, as independent specialists, in cooperation with archeologists for conservation of artifacts, workshops, museums, galleries and historical monuments preservation institutes. |

Restoration and Conservation of Paper, Bookbinding and Documents
The goal of this specialization is to familiarize students with the degradation of materials, conservation and restoration methods, and preventive measures. The practical curriculum gives the students an opportunity to work with drawings, paintings, modelling, graphic techniques, photography and bookbinding.
This is a specialized field requiring the mastery of technological procedures and high levels of manual craftsmanship. Compliance with ethical principles is also essential. Specialized knowledge in the natural sciences, history, codicology and the history of applied arts is needed.
Since this area of study concerns the restoration and conservation of historical artifacts kept especially in libraries, archives, museums and galleries, the curriculum involves the participation of experts from the National Library of the Czech Republic, the State Central Archives of the Czech Republic and Applied Arts Museum in Prague. These organizations are also the key guarantors of this field in the Czech Republic.
An indivisible part of the paper restoration and conservation field is mastery of bookbinding restoration and conservation issues in general. Orientation also on other materials used in the bookbinding, such as textiles, wood, metals, leather and parchment, ivory, horn and nacre is a need. The restoration and conservation of seals and documents is also an integral part of the curriculum, although it is a separate field of art.
The restoration of paper, documents, and book-binding preservation is the only specialization of this kind in the Czech Republic. |

Restoration and Conservation of Arts on Paper and Related Materials
This specialization has been part of University programmes since 2005. Studio of restoration and preservation of artworks on paper and related materials is founding basis for new specialization that is absolutely unique in Czech Republic. This studio combines theoretical and practical knowledge of techniques of restoration and preservation with techniques of restoration and preservation of colour layers.
Significant part of collections kept in Czech museums, galleries, chateau and archives are artworks on paper basis. These are usually various kinds of graphic techniques, paintings and drawings supplemented with combined techniques.
According to lack of qualified restorers, these artworks are in very bad condition. Regarding to previous care and techniques of adjustment of artwork on paper, combination of basis can occur.
It is mainly case of artworks applied on linen and wooden basis. Large parts of temporary collections are artworks on modern basis such as tracing paper or modified cotton cloth. Practical and theoretical education also includes work with these or related materials.
During the study students gain knowledge in area of restoration and art practice, basics of humanities and science, foreign languages and historical techniques. Graduate of studio of restoration and preservation of artwork on paper is able to independently analyze problems related with artwork and apply restoration and preservation techniques on high level. |
